The Economist VP Marketing & Circulation - US

The Economist has successfully built its circulation in the US over the last 15 years and now sells more than 500,000 copies a week. As we build on our market-led strategy to grow our readership among business people in the US we are looking for an experienced VP Marketing and Circulation. This newly created role will play a crucial part in the development and growth of the The Economist Business in the US. The Economist Businesses are The Economist, Economist.com, World in…. and Intelligent Life.

This important, senior role will have direct responsibility for all circulation marketing and sales activities in the Americas (US, Canada and Latin America).

Accountabilities
•Developing, planning and executing successful strategies that efficiently maximize subscription and newsstand sales and build readership of The Economist through marketing efforts targeted to current and prospective customers.
•Developing, planning and executing successful strategies that efficiently maximize performance of Economist.com, World in… and Intelligent Life.
•Responsible for implementing and co-ordinating PR and brand marketing activities under the direction of the Global Marketing Director based in London. (The brand and PR budgets are also managed by the GMD.)
•Preparing and managing of budgets of approximately $25million, and associated forecasts. •Producing regular and ad hoc analysis of achievements against business and program objectives and redirecting resources based on a data-based understanding of the business
•Leading and guiding the circulation team to achieve aggressive objectives for subscription acquisition and renewals as well as newsstand and bulk sales
•Developing a culture focused on the customer and making the transition from list based marketing to customer centered marketing. Use research to develop actionable insights into customer segments.
•Ensure creative and program development processes are efficient and effective
•Managing renewals and customer service

Skills and capabilities profile

Education and Training
•BA/BS degree required
•10 + years marketing management experience
•Extensive experience in direct marketing with a focus on implementing market driven strategies
•Brand-marketing training with brand management experience
•Experience of leading, developing and managing a sizeable marketing team.
•Experience of leading a team during times of change
•Experience of developing and managing partnerships and new media sources a benefit
•Experience of managing agency relationships

Knowledge
•Knowledge of modeling and profiling current and prospective customers
•Knowledge of consumer and B to B marketing

IT
•Strong knowledge of Excel, Word, PowerPoint Key skills
•Results driven
•Motivated and enthusiastic with a commitment to succeed
•Be able to position and sell an established highly valued brand
•Must be well organized and able to balance executing strategy with the need to deliver short term results
